2018 Family Firm Institute Academic Awards
Submissions Now Being Accepted
Submissions are now open for the 2018 FFI Academic Awards:
Best Doctoral Dissertation and Best Unpublished Research Paper. These two awards, created in 1989, recognize the research accomplishments of academics around the world and ensure that emerging knowledge continues to be key to the growth and education of FFI members and the family enterprise field.
The Best Doctoral Dissertation Award
The Best Doctoral Dissertation Award is given to encourage and recognize outstanding academic achievement in the field of family business study. It is awarded annually after a blind, peer review of all submissions. Dissertations may be on any topic of relevance to the understanding and appreciation of family firms and/or family firm advisors. Dissertations must have been written as part of a graduate course of study at an accredited academic institution and defended in the last calendar year.
Award: Cash prize of $2,500 plus one-year membership in FFI and complimentary registration to the 2018 Annual Global Conference in London.

The Best Unpublished Research Paper Award
The Best Unpublished Research Paper Award is awarded annually after a blind, peer review of all submissions. Papers may be on any topic of relevance to the understanding and appreciation of family firms and/or family firm advisors. The manuscript should not have been submitted to a journal at the time it is submitted for the award.
Award: Cash prize of $2,500 plus one-year membership in FFI and complimentary registration to the 2018 Annual Global Conference in London.

- First dissertation award (1989) presented to Colette Dumas, who is now a professor of management and entrepreneurship at Suffolk University.
- Most recent dissertation award (2017) presented to Hanqing Fang and David Jiang.
- First unpublished research paper award (1989 (presented to Stewart Malone, who is now associate professor emeritus at the University of Virginia.
- Most recent unpublished research award (2017) presented to Patricio Duran, Pascual Berrone, Luis Gomez-Mejia, Pursey Heugens, Tatiana Kostova, and Marc van Essen.
- Countries represented by the winners of these awards include Australia, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Israel, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, Sweden, and United States.
- Two dissertation winners are currently members of the GEN faculty—Frank Barbera (2014) and Annika Hall (2004).
