Inherited wealth can create extraordinary opportunity, but it can also raise difficult questions about identity, purpose, relationships, and belonging. In this week’s FFI Practitioner Podcast, host Jordan Rich speaks with Charles Avery “Chip” Fisher about his work with inheritors ages 19 to 50 and the challenges that can accompany significant inherited wealth.

The son of audio pioneer and philanthropist Avery Fisher, Chip grew up in a prominent family and inherited money at age 21.
A Harvard graduate and longtime entrepreneur, he went on to found and lead businesses across multiple industries and today serves as Co-Founder and Chairman of Fisher Wallace Laboratories and on the board of the Avery Fisher Artist Program.

But when he received his inheritance, Fisher found there was no one to talk with about many of the questions that came with it. How do you develop a sense of self-worth when financial security is already established? What do you want to do with your life when so many choices are available? And how do you build relationships and a sense of belonging that are not defined by wealth?

Those experiences eventually informed his founding of Ursus Advisory, a peer-to-peer advisory practice focused on helping next-generation family members navigate the opportunities and challenges that accompany inherited wealth. Fisher works with inheritors drawing on both his personal experience and decades as an entrepreneur.

In his conversation with Jordan Rich, Fisher discusses five of the most important topic areas facing people with inherited wealth and examines one challenge in particular that families and advisors may underestimate: social isolation.

The discussion offers family enterprise practitioners a closer look at the human experience behind inherited wealth and the importance of helping rising-generation family members develop identity, purpose, connection, and a life that feels genuinely their own.
